Film Screening - Why Not Home?

The Birth House are pleased to be hosting an evening of screenings of the feature documentary film ‘Why Not Home?’
Friday the 17th of February 2017 - Screenings at 6.00pm and 8.30pm
Dr. Michelle Minikel thought home birth was crazy–until she got pregnant. Turns out she’s not alone. Why Not Home? exposes a secret from within the medical community. A small but growing number of doctors, midwives, and nurses who attend birth in the hospital are choosing to have their own children at home.
Through the compelling stories of women who choose to go outside the hospitals where they practice to give birth, viewers experience the beauty and challenges facing families both at home and in the hospital in a way that hasn’t been seen before. The film follows several pregnancies through birth, and answers many common questions, including:
  • Whether birth is safe or better at home
  • Why there is often conflicting data and political agendas surrounding home vs. hospital birth
  • Who should give birth in a hospital
  • Why midwifery care, which can play a key role in healthier births, is marginalized in some areas, yet standardised in others

Pioneer Family Chiropractic

The team at Pioneer Family Chiropractic are committed to delivering exceptional chiropractic care for babies and pregnant mothers. The practice in Geelong is a Chiropractic leader in the care of pregnant women, babies & children.  They understand that the foundation of your child’s neurological blueprint is established in the first years of life.   The brain regulates the entire body by communicating through the spine and nervous system.
Care of a mother through her pregnancy is the first opportunity to promote a balanced and optimal internal environment for a baby’s growth and development.  Stressors placed on a baby by poor in-utero positioning, the birth process, the impact of medications or a stressful, emotional environment can be adverse to a developing child’s body.  Chiropractic care can improve function to a child’s spine and nervous system giving them every opportunity to grow and thrive to their potential. Pioneer Family Chiropractic  is available at The Birth House on:
  • Tuesday: 10.00am – 1.30pm with Dr Nicole Britnell
  • Thursday: 10.00am – 1.30pm with Dr Katelyn McGregor
  • Thursday: 4.00pm – 7.30pm with Dr Nicole Britnell

Library books and DVDs missing in action

Our lovely librarian Stephanie Jane has conducted a recent stock-take of The Birth House lending library, and has discovered that many of the titles are missing, or long overdue.  We love having a fully stocked library so that we can loan books and DVDs to pregnant and early parenting families.  We are asking anyone who has borrowed resources from us in the past to please check their book and DVD shelves, and please return any items belonging to The Birth House that you may find.
We also want to thank the very generous people who have donated books and DVDs to us recently, and have made so many additional resources readily available to families in The Birth House community.

Amos Peter

"2016 was a whirlwind of emotions. Chris and I were thrilled to find out we were going to have our baby, we booked a trip to Spain for me to complete my yoga studies, and whilst we were there my mum died suddenly. My world turned upside down. When we returned home early my Birth House midwife Judy, came to my home to offer her condolences and to reassure me that she and my second midwife Pia, would be there for me anytime I needed, and they were.
On Sunday 08/01/2017 we were thrilled to meet our gorgeous boy, Amos Peter, who was born through water at the Birth House at 9:20am weighing 3.64kg (8 pound). Thank you to our amazing team Pia, Judy and Melissa for everything you do to nourish us in this incredibly special time" Laura, Chris & baby Moss. x

Luella Hazel Potter

Tom and Leigh are so excited to introduce their newest little family member. "Luella Hazel Potter has our souls smiling and hearts full of love! She couldn't wait to be earth side arriving on 20th Jan at 12:59pm, 10 days early at 6 pound 5 ounces and a long 50cm. We cannot express our gratitude and thanks enough to The Birth House, especially to our midwife Pia Croft for guiding us through this incredible experience of pregnancy and birth. From support in the early days with the millions of questions we had to feeding me grapes on the bathroom floor in between contractions, we were lucky to have you there with us every step. Also a huge thanks to Melissa McFarlane for being our secondary supporting midwife. Tom and I are so thankful we were able to birth our beautiful baby girl in The Birth House Retreat and couldn't think of a more gentle, warm and welcoming place to bring our daughter earth side".
