Note from the editors

We are pleased to share with you the 2nd Biogeochemical-Argo Newsletter which highlights the main activities over the last four months.
The Biogeochemical-Argo communities are currently expending and organizing themselves at a national level. Official inauguration meetings were held in Canada and Australia. Many other events (past and upcoming) are reported here and we are welcoming your inputs, news and publications for the next edition.
Our ambition is to publish a Newsletter every three months. For each newsletter, we will take the opportunity to highlight one or two pages on our website that is regularly updated.

We hope that you will enjoy.
Please do not hesitate to disseminate and subscribe to continue receiving this newsletter ... and follow Biogeochemical-Argo on Twitter @bgc_argo

US BIOGEOCHEMICAL-ARGO STEERING COMMITTEE

With funding from the US Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry (OCB) program, the inaugural meeting of the US BGC-Argo community will take place on May 23-24, 2017. The meeting will establish a US Biogeochemical-Argo Steering Committee (US BAS) which will provide a unified voice to the US BGC-Argo community and Federal Agencies on issues related to a global Biogeochemical-Argo array. This will include issues related to operation of a data center, regional scale programs and improved technology.

CANADIAN BIOGEOCHEMICAL-ARGO WORKSHOP

On January 4-5, 2017 a planning workshop for the Canadian contribution to the Biogeochemical-Argo program was held at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. About 30 researchers from universities and government labs representing the Canadian Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific regions met to discuss the key science questions that a Canadian Biogeochemical-Argo contribution would address. A white paper is being prepared, and a strategy for securing funding in support of the program was discussed and will be pursued over the coming months.

INDIAN OCEAN BIOGEOCHEMICAL-ARGO COMMUNITY

A workshop was convened to share the learnings from the Biogeochemical-Argo program in order to inform the current Indian Ocean Observing System (IndOOS) review. Around 35 participants from 10 different nations met in Perth, Australia, alongside the International Indian Ocean Science Conference, during 2-3 Feb 2017. The goals of the workshop were inter alia to bring together Indian Ocean researchers interested in Biogeochemical-Argo observations, present findings from Indian Ocean region deployments of Biogeochemical-Argo floats, formulate recommendations for the implementation of Biogeochemical-Argo as part of the review of the Indian Ocean Observing System and discuss potential coordination of future research initiatives and funding

Progress and challenges in autonomous platforms
and sensors for ocean research

ALPS-II meeting

(Autonomous and Lagrangian Platforms and Sensors) which is related to Biogeochemical-Argo present and future activities, was organized at Scripps Institution of Oceanography:
  • To survey progress in autonomous platforms and sensors for ocean research since the original ALPS meeting.

  • To assess future prospects and challenges.
The ALPS-I meeting in 2003 was seminal for Biogeochemical-Argo in the US.
