Dear Colleagues,
As we approach the end of 2017, the AAS wanted to bring you up to date with the status of the GFGP program.
GFGP standard.
In Oct'17, the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) held their first Technical Harmonization Committee meeting to review the 1st Technical draft of the GFGP standard. Delegates at the THC, who are shown in the picture, included representatives from nine African National Standards boards, namely Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe together with representatives from ARSO, the AAS, and the British Standards Institute.

During the 3 days of the meeting the THC members reviewed and reached consensus on the ~200 comments raised by the THC members. None of the accepted comments caused any fundamental changes to the standard or its structure. The outcome is the standard has now progressed through this first stage of the ARSO process and emerged as what is called a Committee Draft. Further comments on the standard can continue to be received until end Jan’18 when it will be reviewed in a 2nd THC meeting in Feb’18.  A public consultation period then follows and if all progresses to plan, the standard should be adopted as a new pan African standard at the ARSO General Assembly meeting in June’18.
A copy of the ARSO committee draft of the GFGP standard ( CD ARS 1651 2017) is available for download from Dropbox at
along with the ARSO form for submitting your comments. We encourage you to download the latest draft of the standard and submit, to the AAS, any comments or observations you may wish to make on the standard.

GFGP Portal based assessment system.
An alpha version (i.e. works like) version of the GFGP compliance assessment system was piloted in July with a small selection of grantors and grantees. Lessons learned from this small pilot have been incorporated in an alpha2 version of the portal which is currently undergoing testing prior to going live on 8th Jan’18.
The AAS would like to encourage the GFGP community to try out the alpha2 version of the portal. If, as a grantor or a grantee, you would like to gain some first hand experience of using the assessment system then please contact the AAS at who will administer your registration.  As this is a trial site, the testing capacity is limited, and so we have to limit grantors to requesting just one grantee to complete a survey - of course grantees will only need to use it once anyway.  Your comments on this prototype assessment system would be most welcome.
The alpha2 version of the system facilitates, but is not limited to, the following functions:

  • Grantees can log in to view invitations for survey completion from a grantor.
  • Grantees can submit completed assessments (at requested tier level) and supporting documentation to grantors
  • Grantees and grantors can assess their own organization by completing a survey of any tier
  • The AAS Secretariat can link Grantor and Grantee accounts so Grantors have an overview of grantees submitted reports
  • Grantors can view submitted reports of Grantees linked to their organization by the AAS Secretariat.

Future developments that include enhanced design and functionality ( e.g. more informative reporting, help documentation etc) and an on line community will become available in later releases of the system in 2018. We still require additional funds to develop the full functionality of the community aspects of the portal and so any seasonal donations to the cause would be most welcome.
The AAS will provide information on development release dates as they become available.

Finally, the AAS are recruiting for several new positions of which one is for a Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) Officer. If you, or anyone you know, may be interested – further details on this and the other vacancies can be found on the AAS website at ( under Calls & Careers.
Seasons greetings to you and your families, and wishing you all a happy vacation and a prosperous New Year.
The GFGP team.
