Shopping Local Helps Keep NYC's Mom-and-Pop Shops Running
Earlier this week, we were delighted to announce the latest exhibition in the Doris C. and Alan J. Freedman Gallery. A collection of photographs by James & Karla Murray, Open for Business: The Art of the Storefront captures the art and vibrancy of New York’s iconic mom & pop shops.

We hope you will take a moment to view the exhibition and be inspired to shop in your local neighborhood this holiday season. Below are ideas for gifts from just a few of the businesses featured in the collection.

Veniero’s Pasticceria & Caffe
342 East 11th Street, Manhattan
This is the oldest continuously running pasticceria in Manhattan and has been in business since 1894. It is now being run by fourth-generation owner Robert Zerilli.

Send a Build-Your-Own Cannoli Kit to an out-of-town loved one who misses New York!

Frank’s Sporting Goods
430 East Tremont Avenue, Bronx
In business since 1922, it is now run by the 2nd generation owner Moe Stein.

Pick up jerseys and caps for all the sports fans in your life! Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets, Nets, Knicks, and even (shh!) those other teams too.

Schmidt’s Candy
9415 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica
This family-owned candy shop has been in business since 1925 to make its homemade chocolates and candies using cast-iron molds from the 1920s.

Surprise a sweet tooth in your life with a dozen old fashioned, handmade candy canes. They may not be uniform, but they are delicious!
