Dear fellow Old St. Mary’s School families,

As we all know, this is a very unique start to a school year. Old St. Mary’s School has been transformed so our children can receive the highest quality education in this new “normal.” During these unprecedented times, we realize that families are re-evaluating and prioritizing their giving, based on their own individual circumstances. Old St. Mary’s School has also evaluated its strategic priorities to ensure they align with the goal of providing our high quality, faith-filled education to all of our families.

For the 2020-2021 school year, OSM has identified two strategic priorities that are not covered by our tuition dollars:
  1. supporting the livelihood of our teachers and
  2. supporting our families via tuition assistance.
These priorities remind us that during these challenging times, we are all in this together.

Prior to Covid-19, OSM Financial Vitality Task Team volunteers worked with Principal Smith to begin streamlining our fundraising efforts so that families can know what to expect at the beginning of the year and plan for how their giving can support the school’s identified needs.  We have outlined below our fundraising plans for the 2020-2021 school year.

In prior years, Oktoberfest has been the fundraising event that enabled OSM to raise funds for tuition assistance. Due to Covid-19, we will not be able to gather together for an in-person Oktoberfest. However, the need for tuition assistance is more pressing than ever due to the economic impact of the pandemic on many school families. Therefore, we are modifying our fundraising methods for the 2020-2021 school year so that OSM’s Blue Ribbon Annual Fund will support our two strategic priorities.

If we are able to gather together as a community before the end of the school year, OSM will present a Spring Signature Event at The Chicago Firehouse Restaurant, underwritten and hosted by Matthew and Laura O’Malley. Funds raised from a Spring Signature Event will support the Blue Ribbon Annual Fund, and therefore, OSM teachers and families via tuition assistance.

In the 2020-2021 school year, fundraising for Old St. Mary’s School’s strategic priorities will include:
  • The Blue Ribbon Annual Fund. Families will be asked to make a financial gift. Recurring payment options will be available to allow families to spread contributions over the entire school year. Details on goals and ways to donate will be communicated soon.
  • Oktoberfest. Families will have the option to purchase Oktoberfest t-shirts and other merchandise. Funds raised will support the Blue Ribbon Annual Fund.
  • A Spring Signature Event. Families will be invited to purchase tickets to a Spring Signature Event, pending state and city approvals for large gatherings. The Spring Signature Event will also provide an opportunity for attendees to bid on family and school “experiences.” If we are unable to host an in-person Spring Signature Event, we will pivot and plan accordingly.

We all believe that Old St. Mary’s School is such a special place. That sentiment has not changed. If anything, we have witnessed through the preparations for this school year how truly special it is. Our efforts this year will support that incredible work. Please reach out to us with any questions regarding our fundraising plans for the year. Keep an eye out for communications regarding the Blue Ribbon Annual Fund and best wishes for a successful school year. Go Knights!

Best regards,

Mary Martin Lowe & John C. Thurston
