AGE co-organizes EP debate on longer working lives to mark EU Day of Solidarity between Generations

This year’s UN International Day of Older Persons urges for ‘taking a stand against ageism’ and rethink our views and attitudes towards the older generation, underlining the prevalence and detrimental impact of ageism, i.e. the stereotyping and discrimination against individuals or groups on the basis of their age.

To mark that Day, AGE co-organized a joint event at the European Parliament.

AGE holds 5th Annual Conference on Inequalities and abuse in old age

AGE Platform Europe will hold its fifth thematic conference on 7 June 2017 in Brussels (day before AGE’s General Assembly). Our annual event will be open to external stakeholders.

This year, AGE conference seizes the momentum of European Commission’s year of actions on violence against women, the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and the growing acceptance within the EU that more needs to be done to ensure an equal protection of older people's rights and combat elder abuse.

AGE workshop on the protection and support for victims of elder abuse

To mark the 12th World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, AGE is organizing a workshopto raise awareness of the specificities of elder abuse, share good practices and experiences in the support and protection of victims of elder abuse, explore the possible interventions - and the advantages and limits of each of them - and discuss how the European Union 2012 Directive on Victims Rights can contribute to improving such support and protection.

Barbro Westerholm nominated as member of EMA Geriatric Expert Group

Barbro Westerholm (SPF, Sweden - and former Vice-President of AGE) is representing AGE at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and was recently nominated as a member of the Geriatric Expert Group. This was a request of AGE for a long time since this expert group was essentially made of geriatricians while the voice of older persons was not directly represented in it.

AGE co-signs Charter for Palliative Care for Older People in Rome

On 30 March 2017 Mrs Barbro Westerholm, former AGE Vice-President and AGE representative in the European Medicine Agency (EMA), participated in a workshop on "Defining the Essence of Palliative Care for Older People: Religions Together" in Rome, organized by The Maruzza Foundation in collaboration with the Ponifica Academi for Life. The workshop ended with the signature of the "Religions of The World Charter: Palliative Care For Older People" which affirms the essential right of older persons and their families to receive appropriate Palliative Care...

50plus Hellas provides free ICT training to older people

As in other countries, older adults 55 to 74 years of age are now the fastest growing group of Internet users in Greece, with numbers exploding from 8% in 2009 to 31% in 2016 (Eurostat, 2017) During the past four years 50plus Hellas has been providing training on ICT to older people with the support of a national telecommunication company, COSMOTE, and local authorities.

European Commission proposes an ambitious European Pillar of Social Rights

On 26 April 2017 the European Commission published its proposal for European Pillar of Social Rights. The European Pillar of Social Rights sets out 20 key principles and rights to support fair and well-functioning labour markets and welfare systems. It is primarily conceived for the euro area but applicable to all EU Member States wishing to be part of it. The initiative follows Commission President Juncker’s announcement in 2014 to work for a ‘social triple A’ for Europe – in order to give greater prominence to employment and social considerations in European policies.

End of mobile roaming fees as of mid-June

On 25 April the Council of the EU formally adopted the legislative revision that will lead to the abolition of roaming costs for mobile telephone calls within the European Union. This means that as from 15 June, mobile users travelling to other countries in the EU will be able to call, text or surf on the net without paying any extra charges.
