I CAN Communicate
Welcome to I CAN's monthly e-newsletter
Today I am proud to announce that I CAN, in partnership with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, will undertake an independent review of the state of provision for children’s speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), entitled Bercow – Ten Years On. This comes at a time when transition is affecting us all.
As a nation we are all in transition, as we welcome a new Prime Minister, we plan for life outside of the European Union, as schools prepare for September and as children look forward to new classes and friends - a time of change for everyone. But with  change comes opportunities and I CAN plans to utilise the opportunity that a new Government presents to make sure that meeting the needs of children with SLCN is a high priority of theirs. Bercow – Ten Years On, which we plan to publish in early 2018, will help formulate the messages we need to deliver to Government, and we will be seeking your involvement through a consultation period during 2017.

Many children not ‘school ready’
Delayed language cited by 78% of primary school leaders as the main cause of children not being ‘school ready’. Early Talk Boost can accelerate children’s language skills by an average of six months.
New school, new start
What can you do to help your child get ready for the next stage of their education? Read our blog for some ideas on how language can support them with their learning, and how to help.
It’s time for the next step
Is your child starting nursery / pre-school?  Prepare with I CAN’s activity book:  Ready Steady Talk contains communication games for 2-3 year olds, also for older children struggling with talking
Preparation for secondary school
More than half of each new intake isn’t ready for secondary education say 10% of school leaders. Following the Talk Boost KS2 intervention, 67% of children caught up with their peers in understanding language.
