Campus Updates

Sustainability: as COVID-19 lays bare the problems, SOU can be part of the solution.

COVID-19 is challenging our way of life, our community and economy, and our relationship with nature and ecological systems. This is much more than navigating through the crisis of a pandemic, the immediacy of pressures on health services around the world and the emotional impact of losing loved ones. COVID-19 is putting a spotlight on the very way we inhabit the planet. Becs Walker, SOU's Sustainability and Recycling manager shares her views on the links between COVID-19, Sustainability and SOU. Virtual Earth Week 2020

SOU’s 2020 Virtual Earth Week was a success! This year, the Student Sustainability Center asked people to post a piece of artwork that illustrates what their pledge is for making a positive change for sustainability. Look down below for some examples people pledged this year. If you want to see the other artwork pieces, go to the Student Sustainability Center’s Instagram account (@sou_studentsustainability).

Sustainability Spotlight

Unseen Heroes

This spring term we wanted to give the Sustainability Spotlight to our unseen heroes. During the pandemic, SOU employees have worked together to continue to provide a home for students remaining on campus and adapted the campus to remote learning so students can continue to learn in a healthy and happy environment. SOU shares gratitude to everyone for all their efforts in helping SOU adapt.

Indoor Gardening

SOU Student Carly King created an easy guide to grow your own starters in your home with simple household materials. No greenhouse needed!

1. Find a compostable container! Examples: egg cartons, recycled plastic containers, toilet paper tubes, etc.
2. Get your seeds. Be sure to read the back of the seed packet to see where you need to grow them indoors.
3. To get started, mix the potting soil with your dirt/soil to get the most bang for your buck when buying potting soil.
4. Next, transfer your soil into your choice of a container as mentioned in previous steps and then add the seeds.
5. Water your starts! Put your starts in a sunny window and put a Tupperware or any clear plastic lid over the top of your starts- bam! A mini greenhouse.
6. Keep an eye on them and be patient. Growing starts takes time.

Virtual Events and Opportunities

Get Involved!

We need your help! We are looking for the input of students, staff, and faculty to help develop a Climate and Sustainability Plan for SOU. We are keen to get as many people as possible involved from SOU and the wider community, to help us shape our plan.

We see a Climate and Sustainability Plan promoting prosperity while protecting the planet. It is about climate action, responsible consumption, equity, innovation, and health and well-being. With this in mind, we are excited about bringing together ideas for what this looks like at SOU.

If you would like to get involved or have ideas for sustainability and climate action at SOU, please use the following jotform link ( and submit a completed form by Friday, May 15.
