Alli Goes to Planting Class

I had the privilege of spending a little time with Sandy Warner and Sara Kelliher over at Oakland Nursery Dublin. You know when you walk inside Oakland and think "Who is the buyer of all these accessories?" That's Sandy. And "Who designs these gorgeous planters and has decades of horticultural experience?" That's Sara. These women both have incredible eyes for design and I found myself wanting to bring something else home at every turn.

On the day of the photo shoot, Sara had everything picked out and ready-to-go. The beautiful planter, soils, plant food and plants; all so lovely. Everyone should have a Sara on spring planter day. She gave me easy and relaxed instruction that turned an empty glazed pot into a work of art. Sara also put together the step-by-step instructions below, so we can all be experts. You will all have a Sara this spring planting season too!

Enjoy the photos, planting instructions and planter coupon below, just for The Close Connection newsletter readers!

1- Put charcoal or stones in the bottom of the planter, this helps with drainage. The charcoal helps filter the soil.
2- Fill the planter 1/2 to 2/3 full with Oakland potting soil. This depth depends on the depth of the pots on the middle and side plants, the top of the plants soil should sit at the top of the planter when planted.
3- Sprinkle Osmicote time release fertilizer on the soil.  The package tells you how much to add.  All season fertilizer!
4- Mix the time released fertilizer into the soil.
5 -Start planting by adding the larger side plant. We used a Magenta African Daisy. You will want to loosen the root balls so the roots spread out and not continue to grow in that ball. Be gentle.
6- Add the middle plant. we used a Yellow Black-Eyed-Susan vine. You want something tall to give it lots of presence.
7-Plant the other larger side plant, another Magenta African Daisy.
8- Add soil to the planter about 3 or 4 inches from the top.
9-Add the taller filler plants, we chose Artemisa Parfum D'ethiopia for the texture, dusty white color and nice fragrance.
10- Plant the edge plants. These should drape over the pot. We used Spider plant, English Ivy, Wandering Jew and some White Alyssum.
Make sure you fill in any holes with soil.
After you have moved the planter to its new home, you will want to water it well.
Spring Floral Refresh
I love following the latest home decor trends. I leaf through home decor mags, excited for the new season's ideas. However, this spring season, I've seen the one trend we've been stripping from homes for the last 25 years; floral wallpaper.

THE spring trend for 2018 is big, bold, bright floral wallpaper. My clients have spent THOUSANDS of dollars to eradicate floral wall paper from their newly purchased dream homes. But here's the crazy thing, these new wallpapers are truly beautiful. Are we really ready for the commitment of this trend? After all, it is a TREND. The good news is, there are also stunning floral home accessories; 2018 spring home fashion that can be packed away just in time for the next home decor craze.

Our team has chosen five floral home accessories that we LOVE, keeping you on trend without the commitment!

1) Wildflowers Coco Door Mat - Frontgate
2) Floral Garden Wall Art - Anthropologie
3) Kate Spade NYC Tidbit Plates - Bed, Bath & Beyond
4) Cork Placemat White/Floral - H&M
5) Thistle Floral Print Organic Duvet - Pottery Barn

Time to Spring for A Dry Rose'
Flowering trees, long rainy days and my amazing seasonal allergies are not the only signs that spring has sprung! You cannot make it through the aisles of every major super market without stumbling over cases and cases of every imaginable Rose'.

What's wonderful about this spring wine is that it's made to drink now! No need to dig through shelves for older vintages; you don't need to look back any farther than 2017 for the perfect Rose' pour.

But here's my favorite part; you can buy fabulous Rose' for only $10-$25 dollars a bottle. This of course is incredible for party hosting and keeping the budget in check.

I've found two pros who have weighed in on the subjects of the best Rose' to buy now and ideas for entertaining with Rose' and food pairing! Sip. Sip, Hooray!
