13 Reasons Why - Series 2 Release

Guidance For Parents

Last spring, 13 Reasons Why was released by Netflix and quickly became one of the most viewed series in the streaming media company’s history. Based on the Jay Asher novel of the same name, the series provocatively covered many heavy topics for young people, including suicide, sexual assault, substance abuse, online and in person bullying, and numerous struggles between friends when these issues are present. 13 Reasons Why challenged schools and parents to face these issues with limited resources to assist them in guiding their child through important and meaningful conversations about these issues.  On May 18, Netflix released Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why - the following link will provide a 13 Reasons Why Toolkit - An important resource for parents, educators, clinicians, youth, and media to help guide young viewers through tough subject matter in the popular Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why.

Save-A-Limb Awareness Week

Agora’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society are raising awareness and fundraising for the Save-A-Limb Foundation. This amazing foundation has helped change the lives of many children.  Leg length discrepancy is a very common, non-genetic condition. About 23% of the general population has a discrepancy of 1 cm or more. But, if the discrepancy is expected to be 5 inches or more at adulthood (about 0.1% of the population), U.S. orthopedic surgeons recommend --- amputation. Such amputations are performed on tiny children; afterwards, these children are fitted with prostheses. One of our 9th grade students at Agora, who is a member of our NJHS. Was expected to have a 6- inch discrepancy with his legs and was told amputate to amputate his lower leg.  Through the help of his amazing surgeon he was able to have his limb lengthened and avoid amputation! He is now able to walk, run, jump, and has full function of both of his legs!!  Our mission for the next week is to raise awareness about this life changing foundation and cause. We would like every member of Agora community to tell a friend about this foundation, and if you can make a donation on the SAVE-A-LIMB Foundation website, you can help change a child’s life!
