The Nerd Yorker

We're excited about this little art film with an Australian and British cast, a character study that delves into issues of aging as a member of an oppressed minority group. It looks a little bleak and maudlin, but I for one am a sucker for a good, cathartic tearjerker such as Logan. Veteran stage actors Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart star.

In terms of hardware, Friday is the day that Nintendo Switch sees daylight. The reviews aren't all favorable, but we'll see how it runs after some early-days patches.

We're paying closer attention to a little playhouse on 29th Street called The PIT Loft. Last week they offered a geeky superhero improv act and this Sunday they're offering up a geeky Star Trek improv act. Redshirts starts at 5 p.m.

Wednesday, Brooklyn's ever-innovative Nitehawk Cinema presents a monster of a monster movie: Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidora: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. The 2001 camp classic will be accompanied by a live score. It's one show only, so you'll want to buy tickets in advance or risk getting closed out.

In addition to another low-budget sci-fi thriller (heavy sarcasm), Nerd York City and environs will host not one but two conventions. Also, one of the year's most important (heavier sarcasm) geek holidays falls midweek. Hope you've got your cards mailed out and presents bought.

Since last issue of The Nerd Yorker, BoroughCon announced Jess Harnell (a.k.a. Crash Bandicoot), Chester Rushing (the guy from Stranger Things -- no not him, the other guy -- no, no, the other other guy) and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Naruto, Ghost in the Shell, Avengers ...). Later today we're announcing Steve Blum, the world record holder for most appearances by a voice actor in video games. He's done some animation work, too. I believe he plays a character similar to Jackman's.
