Message from the Principal

The days are getting longer and the weather is unpredictable as usual.  March also brings with it a shift in activities.  Basketball and cross country skiing have finished up, with badminton already on the go and Track and Field following closely.  March also brings our second report card, and our second set of student led conferences.
This year we will also be collecting information from students, staff and parents through a survey called Our School (formerly, Tell Them From Me).  This survey allows us to access the various voices of College Park School and gives us valuable information about how we are doing as a school community.  Parents will be receiving an email with information as to how to access the survey.  Please take the time to fill out the survey as it really provides us with a great deal of information and allows us to improve what we do in the service of your children.
As the weather warms and the snow melts students will be spending more time outside at breaks including the noon hour. Students in grades 7, 8 or 9, who have parent permission, are able to leave campus.  This is a friendly reminder that this privilege comes with the responsibility of being a good neighbour and ensuring a prompt return to College Park.
Also, I wanted to thank the parents who are being diligent about dropping off and picking up in the parent drop off zone.  Keeping our staff parking area and bus lanes free of traffic (moving or parked) is making our school a less congested and safer area for our students, your children.
Congratulations to all basketball team members on our boys and girls teams.  You represented College Park very well with a competitive attitude and sportsmanship.  Many coaches and referees mentioned how they appreciated your behaviour.
Enjoy the spring season.
K. David McLennan, Principal

With cold weather, sometimes comes sun dogs!  Recess during February provided an opportunity for a science lesson.

Bottle Drive

College Park School's March Bottle Drive will take place on Monday, March 27th.  Bring down your bags of recycling, and we will unload them from your vehicle between 8 and 9 am, or drop them off in the pile prior to lunch.  Thanks for your support!
The February book fair was a resounding success, with Tylan and Mr. Pearn being the lucky winners of books for personal use and the classroom library.

3 on 3 Basketball

Another season has finished and this year we had increased interest in basketball at College Park.  So much so, that we had 3 teams play in the LPSD elementary sports league.  Players had fun learning new skills, team work, fair play and good sportsmanship during practices and in games. Teams were evenly divided and so closely matched that during in-school play downs, each team won a game and lost a game, and the winner had to be determined by total points.  CP3 team lead by Mrs. Burrage and Mrs Mestre went to the end of season tournament.  They had great success by knocking out tough competition in very tight games and made all the way to the final.  Congratulations to all players that participated in 3 on 3 basketball this year and hope to see you on the court next year.

CP1 Mr. Walker, CP2 Mrs. Smith, CP3  Mrs. Burrage and Mrs Mestre

The Grade 1 and 2 classes celebrated the 100th day of school on February 13 with projects, and dressing as 100-year-olds.

Safety Patrol Message
Thank you to the families that continue to use the zebra stripped crosswalks at the entrance and exit of the parent drop off zone.  It helps move traffic more efficiently and most important of all, you are keeping everyone safe.  Remember to park in the designated areas or on the street.  School bus loading zone and the teacher parking lot is off limits for student drop off or pick up.  Thank you.
5A had a blast in February writing and publishing their own stories.
February has been a very busy month for students in the music programs at College Park School!

A hearty congratulations, first of all, to all of the Cobras who brought their talents to the Lakeland College production of the Little Mermaid, Jr.!  It was a fantastic production and definitely something to be proud of.

Our Cobras Big Band participated in the Jazzworks Non-Competitive Jazz Workshops on Feb 8-9.  Students worked together with instructors from McEwan University on their jazz skills, performed in the Showcase Concert, and watched the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra in performance.  It was a great trip and I am very impressed with how awesome our Big Band has become!

Speaking of Big Band, SAVE THE DATE!  Our "Just Jazz" Big Band Dance will be on Friday, May 5 this year.  Stay tuned for details on ticket pricing and guest artists - but the all LPSD Jazz Show is always a treat.

Upcoming Dates:

Grade 8-9 Band Trip - April 9-11 (Sunday - Tuesday)
Big Band Dance - May 5
Final Band Concert (Grades 7-9) - June 6

Yours in Music,
Mr. Kevin Jones

Environmental Club

March means spring cleaning, and we will take your old electronics, batteries and printer cartridges. We recycle them back to Staples.

EAC Badminton (grades 5 - 6)  begins Thursday March 2 from 3:30 - 4:45pm. Practices are Mondays from 6:45am - 8:00am and Thursdays from 3:30 - 4:45pm.

From the Music Room

Wednesday, March 1st at lunch is the first Performance Choir Practice.  All students from grade 2 to grade 9 are welcome!  See Mrs. Namur, Mrs. Moline or the Office for a form.  We require a commitment for eight practices and attendance at the Monday, April 10th concert.  This is an ALL school concert where our students will get to enjoy the musical talents of all the other  schools in our division. It is truly a wonderful evening of music.  There will be a  silver collection at the door.

The Music Room is looking for donations of small toys (like McDonalds Happy Meal sized toys) to help fill our prize chest.  Prizes are given out for rhythm and melody bingo, recorder achievements as well as many other musical contests and games.
The grade ones were busy in music creating a picture to go with the song that they learned.
