Letter from the President

In early October, I had the opportunity to sit down with 20 of our members at World Workplace in San Diego. We had a great conversation, and the experience of meeting with my peers from around the country was as energizing as ever. I came back to work at my own firm with some great ideas – both for my job as well as for the Council.
In that member discussion at World Workplace, I asked what types of programs our members would like to see. Several people indicated that they’d like to see more programs with an emphasis on career management or career advancement. How does someone move from a fairly operational position as day-to-day facility manager to a more strategic role as Director of Facilities or Real Estate?
The size of law firms in comparison to corporations works both for and against the FM as she manages her career. Our organizations are smaller than those in the corporate world – this give us more of an opportunity to become generalists; getting a wide range of experience. At the same time, this smaller size means that the FM departments within our firms also tend to be smaller, and the opportunities for advancement may be slower to come. It also might be a leap to change the perception of firm leadership of you as being more of a strategic thinker than an operational “do-er”.
Having received this feedback, I’m excited to say that the IFMA Legal Council will be offering a panel discussion on career management for law firm FMs at Facility Fusion. We will have seasoned professionals who have advanced to the top of their profession over the course of their careers speaking on an interactive panel. They will give advice and answer questions. I also encourage those of you who are able to attend to share your own career experiences and get feedback both from the panel as well as other attendees!
Facility Fusion is April 4 – 6 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. The cost is just $599 if you purchase tickets before February 24. We will have a whole track of content for Law Firm FMs that covers not just career management, but also Real Estate, Workplace, and Outsourcing Best Practices. I hope to see you there!

Join us at Facility Fusion!

Join the IFMA Legal Council at Facility Fusion from April 4th through 6th in Las Vegas. The council is sponsoring a whole track of content specific to law firms with topics ranging from:
  • Legal Workplace Design
  • Outsourcing at Law Firms
  • Real Estate Challenges for Law Firms
  • Leadership and career management for FMs in Law Firms
In addition to the programmed education, there will also be many opportunities to network with your peers, build relationships, and learn best industry practices.

The cost to attend the conference with early registration is just $599 (cost goes up by $150 after Feb 27). The knowledge and connections you will get from attending will represent a real value proposition for your firm in subsidizing your attendance.
