VOLUME 2 ISSUE 1
ON THE HILL
Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.

The year 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation. To celebrate this momentous occasion, I have created the Saskatoon-Grasswood Canada 150 Award. The award celebrates individuals in our community who have made the community and Canada as a whole, a better place.  A Canada 150 pin will be awarded every two weeks in 2017.  To nominate an individual for the award please visit my webpage and click on the link on the homepage, or visit my office to pick up a nomination form.

The first recipient of the Canada 150 Award is Theo Anderson.  At just five years of age, he created and sold Christmas cards to raise money for a family friend's stem cell treatment. To read more about Theo and his award see below!

As always, please scroll down to see what I have been doing in Ottawa and Saskatoon over the past couple of weeks.

Don`t hesitate to stop by my office, or give us a call if you have any questions or if we can be of assistance.

SASKATOON-GRASSWOOD CANADA 150 CITIZEN AWARD
THEO ANDERSON
Five-year-old Theo Anderson was inspired to fundraise to pay for a family friend's stem cell treatment.  Jordan Friesen was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa in 2008, a degenerative eye disease that results in tunnel vision, reduced night vision, and a loss of peripheral vision.  Theo got to work and made handcrafted Christmas Cards and sold them for a minimum of $10 for a bundle of four.  Theo raised $2140 through the sale of his Christmas cards.  Thank you Theo for being a great leader in our community!
NEWS FROM THE HILL
TRIBUNAL RULES THAT LIBERAL DUTIES ON DRYWALL HURTS WESTERN CANADA
Above:  MP David Yurdiga, Kevin and MP Hon. Gerry Ritz getting ready to testify at the drywall tribunal.
On December 6, 2016, I and two fellow Conservative MP's testified at the Canadian International Trade Tribunal on behalf of the building and contracting sector who were adversely affected by the staggering 325% tariff arbitrarily slapped on U.S. drywall.  The Canadian International Trade Tribunal heard Conservative testimony and their finding is optimistic news for builders in our region.  Conservatives were the only Members of Parliament representing the interest of their constituents by participating in the Tribunal's public inquiry.  The Tribunal called on the Government to immediately remove excessive tariffs.

The Canadian International Trade Tribunal is recognized domestically and globally as a centre of excellence in the fair and timely adjudication of trade law matters.

ASSESSMENT NOTICES MAILED AND 60 DAY ASSESSMENT APPEAL PERIOD BEGINS
On January 9th, Assessment Notices were mailed to property owners in Saskatoon and the 2017 Assessment Roll opens.

The Assessment Notice provides owners with an updated market value assessment of their property using the base date of January 1, 2015.  Provincial legislation requires that all properties are reassessed every 4 years so that property assessments reflect a more current value.

The last reassessment was conducted in 2013.  Since 2013, property owners have been paying property tax each year based on the assessed value of their property as of the base date of January 1, 2011.

HERITAGE IN THE COMMUNITY
BROADWAY THEATRE
Designated as a Municipal Heritage property in 1997, this property was built by an independent company in 1946.  The Art Moderne influence is visible in the stucco siding and the décor of the lobby.  The building is also representative of the history of the Broadway Avenue commercial district, diversifying the area that is mainly retail and services.
