Scholarship holders go Laxenburg I 13 October

Our visit to Laxenburg, 15 kilometres south of Vienna, included a walk through the palace garden, a boat ride and a guided tour at the Franzensburg. Afterwards we were welcomed by a representative of IIASA, learned about the institution's history, ongoing research projects and the IIASA offers for young researchers.

Welcoming new scholarship holders

To socialise with other international students and to get to know more about Austria is the aim of our events. Each semester we start out with a welcome meeting for newcomer, which is followed by AlumniTalks. This time Csaba Vad from Hungary spoke about the "Global change in alpine lakes – what can microscopic organisms tell us?". The event was closed with food, drinks and cordial conversations.

Charles Rutikanga – Participation in Film Days

In cooperation with this human world film festival, APPEAR screened the documentary "Unforgiven: Rwanda". The film presented the process of forgiveness and reconciliation 20 years after the genocide in Rwanda and was followed by a discussion with our current scholarship holder Charles Rutikanga from the University of Rwanda.

Meeting of OeAD-HEC scholarship holders

The meeting with the Pakistani scholarship holders took place at the OeAD in Vienna. Scholarship holders had the possibility to network. Besides they got relevant information concerning the entry and residence conditions and were encouraged to discuss new ideas and instruments to improve their situation in Austria.

Traditions from all over the World

The Christmas party for scholarship holders took place on 15 December. Thanks to the active participation of our scholarship holders it was a memorable event with various presentations of Christmas traditions and different food from all over the world. For instance Guibien Cleophas Zerbo told us about the peaceful and syncretistic way of living together and sharing traditions of Muslims and Christians in Burkina Faso.

Tesfaye Getachew Mengistu | Ethiopia

"I always admired not only the infrastructure and development in Austria but also the excellent hospitality and collaboration of the people" says Tesfaye. He successfully completed his PhD studies in Austria and is currently working as a researcher on animal breeding and genetics at the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (EBI).

Benedict Mutua | Kenya

"The stay in Austria enabled me to clearly understand how to carry out research and write fundable research proposals in addition to publications" stresses Benedict Mutua in his alumni portrait. Since the completion of his PhD at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) he was involved in several international research projects. Currently he is coordinating the APPEAR project "Strengthening Capacities for Agricultural Education, Research and Adoption in Kenya – SCARA", a partnership between Egerton University and his former host institution BOKU.

Summer School AEMS wins "Best of Austria"-Award

The Prize "Education for sustainable development – Best of Austria" was awarded to the Summer School Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS), organized by the OeAD Housing Office. How economic, political, monetary and environmental factors need to be changed in order to create a more sustainable world and what could be the alternatives to the current profit-oriented economic system - by considering happiness and satisfaction rather than materials goods - are questions discussed in this summer school.

New scholarship agreement for Indonesian Students in Austria

Based on the agreement between the Indonesian Ministry of Education and the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research and the agreement between the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia (DIKTI) and the OeAD in cooperation with ASEA-UNINET, we are proud to announce the new scholarships for Indonesian students at Austrian universities.

The EURAXESS central portal has been launched

The new EURAXESS portal offers, for instance, a responsive design for all devices, a broader target group also addressing entrepreneurs and businesses, profiled info for registered users and an improved search functionality. Besides, a partnering tool allows to search for individuals and institutions. Moreover, internship offers, training resources, a career development centre search, and the Science4Refugees Buddy Programme can be found on the portal. It is fresh and user-friendly. The new Austrian website is coming soon as well.

HOPES – Higher and Further Education Opportunities and Perspectives for Syrians

Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and northern Iraq are currently home to almost 5 million Syrian refugees, of whom 400,000 are between 18 and 24 years old, and only 5% of them having access to higher education. The European Union's Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis (MADAD) aims to improve perspectives for young Syrians and contribute to the preparation for post-crisis reconstruction in Syria with a new project: HOPES provides access to higher education opportunities for the Syrian youth as well as host communities through various measures, among them scholarships, individual counselling and funding for short projects.

Eurasia-Pacific Uninet Projects | 31 January 2017

The Eurasia Pacific Uninet (EPU) Network aims at establishing contacts and scientific partnerships between Austrian universities, universities of applied sciences, other research institutions and member institutions in East Asia, Central Asia, South Asia and the Pacific region. Interested researchers from EPU member institutions are invited to submit their project proposal within the new call for funding of multilateral projects.

Ernst Mach Follow-up Grant (EZA) | 1 February 2017

Continue your scientific cooperation with Austria and apply for a short research stay in Austria. Former scholarship holders of the OeAD from Non-European Developing Countries who have a doctorate degree and who are now pursuing research or teaching at a higher education institution or university in a Non-European developing country are eligible. The maximum age is 50 years.

Ernst Mach Grant – worldwide | 1 March 2017

Eligible for application are a) Post-graduates pursuing a doctoral/PhD programme outside Austria; b) Post-graduates and post-docs wishing to pursue research in Austria with a view to an academic career and who completed their studies at a university outside Austria after 30 September 2015;
c) Post-docs who are working as lecturers at a university outside Austria.

Franz Werfel Fellowship | 1 March 2017

Applications are only open to young university teachers of German language and Austrian literature. Those in receipt of a Werfel grant can work as visiting researchers at university departments and carry out specialist studies in libraries, archives or at research institutions.

Richard Plaschka Fellowship Post-Doc | 1 March 2017

Eligible for application are highly qualified post-docs in the field of history who are primarily occupied with Austria-related topics. Recipients of Richard Plaschka grants can work as visiting researchers at university departments and institutes and carry out specialist studies in libraries, archives or at research institutions.

Eligible for application are only Pre-doctoral Fellows, who are after finishing their Master or diploma studies pursuing a doctoral/PhD programme outside Austria and who want to deepen their scientific and specialist knowledge.

Scholarship Foundation of the Republic of Austria | 1 March 2017

The scholarships are awarded by the foundation board from funds of the Conciliation Fund of the Republic of Austria for descendants of forced labourers or people coming from countries that suffered exceptionally from the Nazi regime, particularly from the recruitment of forced labourers. The target groups are undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates, postdocs and persons wishing to pursue a master degree programme in the field of international relations.
