Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer
Symposium

The University of New Hampshire is hosting a symposium to address the critical issues around ultra-low temperature (ULT) sample storage. This will include the proper, safe, affordable, and environmentally responsible aspects of storage using ULT freezer technologies. Allison Paradise, our Executive Director, will be speaking about the new data provided to the EPA to assist with the development of an ENERGY STAR® specification for ULT freezers. The event takes place Thursday, October 13. A Simple, Affordable Way to Cut Energy Costs

All equipment that can be turned off should be turned off before leaving the lab. However, this is often not the case. Outlet timers are an easy, convenient way of turning on equipment at a particular time so that it is ready when the workday begins, and therefore eliminates the need for it to be left on overnight. They typically cost around $10, and can help save thousands of dollars worth of energy!

Be Good In The Hood

A single chemical fume hood can use as much energy as 3.5 average households! An energy reduction upwards of 40% can be achieved by simply lowering the sash height of a Variable Air Volume (VAV) fume hood. Fume hood sashes are also in place for researchers' safety, and shutting the sash helps protect you and your colleagues should something be volatile or explode in the hood. To raise awareness about safety and sustainability for fume hoods, My Green Lab has begun a 'Be Good in the Hood' campaign.  The stickers below remind people to close their fume hoods. These stickers are clear (shown below on a cardboard box), and should be affixed to the fume hood sash.  To purchase these stickers for your lab or institution, simply reply to this email.
