Featuring Our October Green Lab Champion
Erin Fry
As a Human Genetics graduate student at the University of Chicago, I was concerned about the environmental impact of the research done at my University. For a short period of time, UChicago had a sustainable laboratory program, but it fizzled out a few years before my arrival, thus laboratories had no guidelines or support for increasing their sustainability.
Hence, I founded UChicago GreenLabs. For a year and a half, I have been directing the program and initiating projects to help decrease the energy use and waste creation of numerous biology labs. These projects include a GreenLabs certification program, Kimberly-Clark nitrile glove recycling, 'Shut the Sash', ULT freeze up, and pipette tip box recycling campaigns. So far, eleven labs have been certified, and even more labs have implemented other sustainable protocols.
