EPRA Monthly Brief
April 2018
In early April, EPRA partnered with Degroof Petercam in Brussels, to present 16 listed real estate EPRA member companies to a series of Benelux investors and offer them an insight into the sector. We also participated in the first edition of the CF&B REIT event in Paris, a platform providing one-on-one meetings for more than 30 companies and 60 investors. We held our first private wealth manager event of the year focusing on logistics with record attendance and we will follow it up with a retail event on May 23.

Last week we also held the annual Reporting & Accounting Workshop, which you can read more about below, and I was pleased to meet with the leaders from REESA (Real Estate Equity Securitization Alliance) who travelled from the US, Canada, Japan, Australia and the UK for our first meeting in 2018. Among the subjects on the agenda was current EU legislation, especially PRIIPs (Packaged retail investment and insurance products) and MiFID II, as these have a global impact on investors.

Finally, the countdown to the 2018 Conference has begun and I’m pleased to announce that registration is now open. You can see the full programme here, and I would like to thank our early sponsors Aroundtown, Hispania, Dream Global, PSP Swiss Property, JLL, Unibail-Rodamco, Vonovia, Credit Suisse, alstria office REIT, TLG IMMOBILIEN, Green Street Advisors and Cofinimmo for making this event possible.

Mind the gap: EPRA, GRESB close in on shared sustainability language

EPRA and the real estate sustainability benchmarking organisation GRESB have completed the first comparative Gap analysis of EPRA’s latest sustainability Best Practices Recommendations (sBPR) Guidelines with the 2018 GRESB Real Estate Reference Guide that encompasses public and private equity property investments. The Gap analysis concludes that the industry represented by both bodies is, in the main, converging on common definitions of ESG performance in real estate, though further consolidation still needs to be achieved. It is the first Gap analysis between the two most recognised initiatives in the real estate industry. This move streamlines and unifies the number of data sets property companies, investors and regulators need to use to make informed and responsible decisions, and reduces the reporting burden based on the commonalities identified by the analysis. The impact of emerging technologies on European listed real estate

New technologies can transform the way we live, do business, and perceive ourselves. But what impact do they have specifically on listed real estate industry? The RealFoundations research, supported by EPRA, efforts to answer this question by focusing on the impact of such technological fields as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, 3D printing, Virtual Reality on the three real estate sectors – Office, Retail and Industrial. Furthermore, the paper identifies a five-step approach which suggests how the companies across all sectors can leverage the power of these emerging technologies. Download the report here.

Wrapping up the Reporting & Accounting Workshop

The 2018 Workshop, moderated by John Lutzius from Green Street Advisors, convened in Paris at Unibail-Rodamco’s innovative Majunga building in La Defense. The event kicked off with a keynote speech by Paul Craven a behavioural economist who spoke about the psychology of decision-making and how this applies to listed real estate. The afternoon concluded with ESMA, EFRAG and other participants exchanging views on IFRS and supplemental reporting measures in practice. Michael Brooks, CEO of the Canadian sister association REALPAC commented: “EPRA enables that growth of trust collectively in the European market and around the world”.
