CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD is a European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation project, targeted to people with mild to moderate dementia and their caregivers. The main objective of the project is to provide dementia community with an innovative digital platfrom whose personalized services will assist to meet the care needs and will meliorate the quality of life of the "dyad" person living with dementia - caregiver.

CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD: A user-centred design approach
Throughout the first year of the project, the team's efforts mainly focused on identifying the end-users' characteristics, capabilities and preferences that will allow to tune the CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD platform's specifications to their needs, thus ensuring both optimal functionality and usability. A Focus Group approach was applied in the context of a PACT (People, Activities, Context and Technology) analysis, in order to gather user requirements and set guidelines for the design of the digital platform. The first feedback received from potential end-users was encouraging, since the focus group participants generally confirmed that people with dementia and their caregivers may benefit from the platform's services. The results of the analysis are available in the PACT Analysis and Focus Group Reports, accessible through the CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD website.

Furthermore, a detailed study on identifying and describing the platform's user target groups was completed in August 2016, allowing the project team to initiate the design and organisation of the piloting phase that will be carried out for 18 months in 4 European countries. You can access the Target Group Definition report here.

In parallel, the project's partners participated in several activities and events held by dementia and alzheimer communities around Europe, introducing the project and disseminating its goals and first results, allowing in this way continuous feedback collection from potential end-users.

Usability Study and Pilot Operation

In the forthcoming months, the project activities will concentrate on preparing and operating 4 parallel large scale pilots and evaluating the results derived from the interaction of the defined target groups with the platform.

At first, a preliminary usability study will be performed, starting at the end of January 2017, in order to improve the platform for the pilot phase. During the usability study, 20 to 40 dyads in Italy, Spain, UK and France will be provided with access to the CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD platform and they will be guided how to use it. The dyads will be contacted on a weekly basis by the project's researchers in order to provide their feedback based on their practical experience with the platform.

The piloting phase is expected to start in May 2017. Four pilots will run in four European countries (Italy, Spain, UK and France) in order to investigate the benefits of using CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD, comparing data of the user groups with respective data of control groups. The pilot study will last for 18 months and a total of 600 dyads will participate.
