June 2020 Dean's Note
Dear Alumni and Friends,

I hope all of you are safe and well during these challenging times.

In the wake of the killings of George Floyd and other Black men and women, members of our law school community have been moved to action. I thought you may want to see this message I shared with our community on June 1. We also hosted two town halls during the first week of June to discuss these killings, the newly energized nationwide actions protesting police brutality and systemic racism, and how our community might participate in similar actions and effect change. During these discussions, several students urged, among other things, that the law school issue a strong anti-racist statement. Staff and faculty also affirmed a desire to make a clear statement of anti-racism and a commitment to action. An ad hoc group of faculty subsequently drafted this resolution in consultation with our Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations. I support this resolution and hope you will consider supporting it as well. You may do so here.

While we grapple with these important issues, we are also focused on safely returning to campus this fall despite the challenges of Covid-19. We have worked with the university and UF Health to develop a scientific, health-based plan that will permit us to offer law school courses in person in modified classrooms that ensure physical distancing, with online options for those students who choose to take courses remotely. Our faculty and staff have been engaged in workgroups throughout the summer designed to maximize classroom and virtual learning opportunities while keeping the safety and health of our community at the forefront of our analysis. We are also undergoing major technology upgrades in our classrooms to ensure a high-quality experience for students who choose to take courses remotely. We learned so much from the remote delivery of our spring courses, and I am confident that we will be able to continue to offer an exceptional legal education this fall.

We are also planning to meet with all of you in new ways! In just a few weeks we will launch our first-ever Virtual Summer Reception series with “stops” throughout the state and nation. I am looking forward to engaging with even more of you in this new format. Please join us as your schedule permits.

Until then, I hope you stay safe and well.
