Gym instructing

Adaptations where formative assessment evidence exists
Option 1
In order for learners to be considered for adapted gym assessments, they must meet the following requirements:

Have been formatively assessed in the gym environment instructing a range of equipment as set out in the qualification’s specific assessment guidance. (Formative assessment evidence may include records of practical sessions delivered live in a face-to-face teaching environment, or learner recorded evidence submitted to the centre).

Adapted assessments without formative assessment evidence
Learners who have not been formatively assessed in the gym environment instructing a range of equipment, and who are unable to meet this requirement, will require alternative adaptations to enable them to achieve their qualifications.

Option 2
Learners will need to plan and deliver an adapted session with their client and undertake an interactive professional discussion.

Option 3
Currently, learners who are registered on gym instructing qualifications can progress to personal training qualifications without having completed their summative practical assessments. Learners who currently choose this option are required to go back and complete their gym assessments once the gyms have reopened and it is safe to do so. Learners are unable to be certificated for either qualification until the gym assessments have been completed.

Applying for adapted assessments
Centres wishing to adapt assessments for their learners will need to apply to Active IQ via their centre-allocated external verifier. Approval must be sought from the allocated external verifier before planning or proceeding with any adapted assessments. The external verifier will send an application form which needs to be completed and returned.

Once the application form is submitted, the external verifier will check the information provided and arrange a short call. The call will be used to discuss and agree on the appropriate assessment adaptations, and the internal and external quality assurance requirements of proceeding with assessments for each cohort of learners.

Personal training
In line with guidance from both Ofqual and CIMSPA, Active IQ has applied and been approved to offer adapted assessments for the Active IQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training and the Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training.

Ofqual and CIMSPA have agreed that adaptations can be made to the summative practical assessments for personal training qualifications. For further information and a copy of the guidance, please click here.
Centres wishing to adapt practical summative assessments for their learners will need to apply to Active IQ via their centre’s allocated external verifier. Approval must be sought from your allocated external verifier before planning or proceeding with any adapted practical assessments. Work-based learning qualfications

Ofqual and CIMSPA have agreed that adaptations may be appropriate for learners on work-based learning qualifications, e.g. NVQs where learners meet the following requirements:

  • Were in their workplace for a minimum of 12 weeks prior to lockdown occurring
  • Were observed within their workplace undertaking activities as prescribed in the specific qualification guidance (for example: gym instructing; personal training; leading physical activities; conducting operational services activities; conducting leisure management activities) on at least one occasion prior to lockdown occurring

Centres that wish to adapt assessments for their learners will need apply to Active IQ via their centre allocated external verifier. Approval must be sought from your allocated external verifier before planning or proceeding with any adapted assessments. The requirement to be able to adapt learner assessments was previously limited to learners registered on programme on or before 20 March 2020, and these learners must also have been due for certification on or before 31 July 2020, in line with Ofqual Condition VTQCov2. This requirement has now been withdrawn by Ofqual and, with immediate effect, any of the approved assessment adaptations can be applied to all learners, regardless of their actual registration or planned certification date.

Centres that wish to adapt practical summative assessments for their learners will need to apply to Active IQ via their centre’s allocated external verifier. Approval must be sought from your allocated external verifier before planning or proceeding with any adapted practical assessments. Your external verifier will send you an application form that needs to be completed and returned; they will then arrange a call with you to talk through the agreed, qualification-specific adaptations and the IV/EV sampling requirements so you are clear about them. If you have any queries, please contact your allocated external verifier.
