Welcome to our September newsletter. This month heralds a move into Autumn and ‘back to school’ for many families. Of course, that means it’s back to college too for further education students and adult learners.

The new academic year will no doubt feel different from usual as students and teachers return to a post-lockdown setting with social distancing, student bubbles, one-way systems and other safety procedures in place. For some, a return to the classroom is not yet possible or desirable and for these learners, on-line lessons will remain in place. As we know at Active IQ, blended learning can be very successful. We have also heard from many colleges and training providers that the younger cohorts of students aged 16-19 have been most receptive to digital learning over lockdown. We hope that however your sixth form or college groups and timetables are shaping up this September that the new term starts well.  Don’t hesitate to contact your Active IQ representative if you need any further support or guidance.

It's good to see that all gyms are now able to open across England, Wales and Scotland but a sense of uncertainty remains. Not all facilities are fully open and the return of members is gradual. While gyms, group exercise and organised team sports are not included in the new ‘maximum of six’ restrictions, the rules that kicked in on Monday will sow a few seeds of doubt among people. As an industry we can only do our best, look forward and keep alert to not just the Government’s changing legislation but also to the mood among the public, our learners, training centres and other partners.

We welcome more freedom for face-to-face teaching and assessment, but for those who are not ready to engage in person, our blended learning and adaptations remain in place. It also means we are ready for any second lockdown should it occur. For now, the Active IQ team is looking ahead and keeping motivated with new courses, fresh offers and ‘at home’ National Fitness Day activity plans amongst other things. We hope to see you alongside us, keeping heads up and minds focused.

See you next month!

National Fitness Day - Wednesday September 23, 2020 – will look a little different to previous years. But just because we can’t join in a big group activity as we usually do, that doesn’t mean we can’t be active! In fact, with the highs and lows of lockdown and disrupted daily patterns, setting aside time for a workout is more important than ever before.

To inspire our colleagues into action, qualified instructors from the Active IQ team have put together eight 30-minute workouts which will be hosted online for all our staff to enjoy at home. Staff can log in at a time to suit them to watch one or more sessions on National Fitness Day. There is a wide choice of activities and levels so that everyone can have a go including:
  • HIIT for Beginners and HIIT for Intermediate/Advanced individuals – presented by Lesley Rothera, Active IQ External Verifier
  • Aerobics and Body Conditioning – presented by Kelly King, Active IQ External Verifier
  • Bootcamp and Body Combat – presented by Gavin Baxter, Active IQ Business Consultant

Postponing ukactive Active Uprising Awards – the right decision
We were disappointed but not surprised to hear that the ukactive’s Active Uprising Awards have been postponed until 2021. As a sponsor of these awards we have worked closely with the ukactive team for several years and enjoyed seeing them grow in stature. Last year and this, Active IQ was involved in the first round of judging. An absolute privilege, this gives great insight into the wide range of excellent work being undertaken in our industry.
We support ukactive’s decision to enter all 2020 applicants into the 2021 awards and look forward to looking afresh at entries later this year. While the industry has faced many hardships and challenges since March, the situation has also inspired innovation and creative approaches to training, learning, delivery of services and fulfilment of digital options. The 2021 Active Uprising Awards will celebrate the best practice and shining spirit arising from the pandemic and we look forward to joining the industry to recognise these achievements when the time is right.
AOC Sport Fitness Trainer Competition goes digital!
The annual AOC Sport Fitness Trainer competition has gone digital in order to continue despite the COVID-19 social distancing and lockdown. Now in its ninth year, the competition aims to showcase and test the skills, knowledge and ability of personal trainers to deliver excellent fitness instruction to clients. It’s open to anyone studying a PT qualification and competitors can enter from colleges, training providers and employers as an apprentice.

Active IQ has been proud to sponsor the competition for the last six years and we are delighted to see it successfully pivot online to ensure it continues with no break. The virtual competition will run from 17th- 23rd October and all finalists will take part via zoom either from their home or local gym environment. They will be tested across a range of tasks, reflecting the demands on PTs at this current time including: Core fitness skills; Instructing skills; Online marketing skills; workout planning and writing; a virtual job interview and a home equipment challenge to include objects from around the house that could be used as part of a workout.

Good luck to everyone taking part!
