At the core of Medecins Sans Frontieres' identity is a commitment to independence, neutrality and impartiality. These ideals have driven every aspect of their important work - from medical care and logistics to finance and communications. Set up in 1984, the Medecins Sans Frontieres Australia office sends and supports approximately 200 Australians and New Zealanders into the field every year. With projects currently running in nearly 70 countries, Medecins Sans Frontieres Australia is working globally from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe supporting people where the needs are greatest.

Learning outcomes:

  • Explain the emergency medical work being undertaken by Medecins Sans Frontieres Australia addressing neglected, forgotten diseases and chronic conditions
  • Learn how Nepean GPs may get involved with Medecins Sans Frontieres Australia in the field or at home
  • Summarise the work projects being conducted from the Medecins Sans Frontieres Australia office

Drug and Alcohol GP Education -
online modules

Audience: General Practice
2 Category 2 RACGP QI&CPD points

These online modules are available by invitation only to GPs in the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith local government areas, until 31st December 2018.

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing condition which is difficult to treat. GPs and other primary care professionals have a key role to play in prevention, early detection and management of substance misuse and dependence.

Please join Dr Graeme Judson and Michael Walker for one or more of these on-line topics. Each video is approximately 1/2 hour in length, with recommended reading and a survey increasing the whole module to approximately 1 hour.

Six separate on-line modules on the most commonly used drugs (and alcohol) have been developed to provide up to date, evidence based information covering:

  • Incidence, prevalence & history
  • Pharmacology, effects & complications
  • Pregnancy
  • Diagnosis (continuum, screening and brief intervention)
  • Intoxication withdrawal management
  • Treatment

Free Cultural Competency Training for
Practice Staff

Audience: General Practice
The Cultural Competence Program (CCP) is a range of online training courses and online resources designed to train people to better manage cultural diversity.

Courses are available anytime, anyplace and on any device via app or web. The Program takes around 3 – 4 hours to complete, with each module featuring a learning outcome and links to additional material to allow participants to delve deeper into the subjects presented.

Individual learning outcomes include developing an understanding of:
  • What culture, diversity, inclusion and cultural competence mean
  • How cultural diversity contributes to competitive advantage
  • How unconscious bias affects everyone’s decision making and what can be done to ameliorate its affects
  • How different cultures have different ways of thinking, acting and communicating
  • How different culture’s values, attitudes and beliefs can affect communication
  • How people from different cultures adapt to their new culture and the impact this can have on the workplace
