Cyber Security and the Maritime Market. During the initial weeks of our cyber security focused adjacent market series, MSUA gathered information and insights from a U.S. Government / industry policy perspective on potential impacts and areas of involvement for the satellite mobility community.

As our goal is to take a 360 view of the affects of cyber security and the mobility market, we now turn to our industry partner, Global VSAT Forum (GVF). GVF recently held a cyber security panel discussion as part of the Posidonia event held earlier this month in Athens. Martin Jerrold, GVF's Chief of International Programme Development chaired the discussion.  Panelists were asked their view on how developments in maritime satcoms and navigation are influencing the cyber approach.  Several MSUA members served as panelists including Ronald Spithout, President, Inmarsat Maritime; and Ghani Behloul, CMO, Marlink.  In general, panelists concluded that cyber security is a complex issue requiring a thorough understanding from the maritime IT community of the risks associated with the on-board and on-shore communication systems along with the myriad of interconnected ship systems.  They also concluded that service providers play a critical role in ensuring that service level agreements are enhanced to include cyber security.  To learn more, click.

MSUA Interview.  Martin Jerrold, GVF's Chief of International Programme Development, graciously agreed to provide MSUA a more in-depth interview on cyber security and implications to the maritime market.

Topics discussed include, challenges related to cloud-based data storage and the IoT, industry best practices, steps to minimize threats, related trends, training programs and the role of crew and other personnel.  Click here to read the interview.

Cyber Security Task Force.  Last, the GVF has commissioned a Cyber Security Task Force comprising security experts and representatives from across the satellite industry. The goal of the task force is to create a set of vendor neutral specifications for the industry that enhance security without reducing the utility and performance of VSAT solutions.
