Welcome to Food Security for America's February Newsletter

What is Food Security?

14% to 25% of Americans are in need of food security, the ready availability of nutritionally adequate food. In many instances, emergency food pantries are not designed to meet this chronic need, leaving many families hungry, lonely and stressed.

What is a FANN?

A FANN (Friends and Neighbors Network) is a community of low-income families where its members can have the need for nutritious food met, learn about healthy nutrition and lifestyles and foster spiritual communication and gratitude. FANN participants greatly increase their opportunities for self-sufficiency.

Food Security for America:

Manages FSA-run FANNs in low-income apartment complexes in Georgia;
Trains non-profits and churches around the U.S. to operate their own FANNs, and
Links FANN organizations and churches across the country.

In four short years we have grown to 21 states. Read inspiring success stories on our website.

Paulina Agbaje, a member of our Walton Reserve FANN who was recently hired by Prime Power Services, a firm providing emergency power generation to hospitals, data centers, and other facilities. Paulina found her position from an announcement that was made in a FANN meeting. The strong sense of mutual support in the FANN creates opportunities for personal and professional growth.

FANNs Learn To Cook Healthy Meals on a Budget

FANN members, many with their children, enjoy six-week cooking classes at both the Walton Reserve and Walton Ridenour FANNs. Trainers from the Atlanta Community Bank use Share Our Stength's Cooking Matters curriculum. Cooking Matters helps families to shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget, as part of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign.

FANN members in Michigan, sponsored by My First Church of God understand how being in a community is key to increasing self-reliance. When Dawn broke her arm, a care team was formed to help with grocery shopping, cooking, daily tasks and prayer. Another member, Diana, recently lost her husband and found herself at the lowest point in her life. She is grateful for the much-needed food, but finds the self esteem boost and overall sense of belonging to be the true blessing. FANN members support each other through difficulties, building relationships in amazing ways.

Kandia and Craig Randolph, of Walton Village joined the FANN when they moved from New York. Kandia is “beyond grateful” for the FANN program and describes it as a “ridiculous blessing because it not only allows her to provide for her children, also gives her the opportunity to volunteer and be part of a supportive community.” She enjoys sharing her gifts and talents, and says it feels good to be needed. Her family has made friends with other FANN members. She adds, “It is a blessing to interact with others, share prayer concerns, and grow into a better Christian.”
